How many sessions will I need?
Everybody's journey is different but as a guideline Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works quite quickly, usually between 8 and 12 sessions although depending on the problem, sometimes more and can be less. Specific therapy such as Smoking Cessation is a one off session which lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours and Fears and Phobia can be solved within as little as 5 sessions.
What is involved with an Initial Consultation?
At the beginning of your Initial Consultation, whether online or face to face, we will discuss the reason for you coming to see me and what you would like to achieve. I will then gather some information from you such as contact details and some medical questions and then I will explain a little bit about how the brain works and why you may be feeling as you do.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a natural state of selective, focused attention, and, even though it is 100% natural and normal, it remains one of the most fascinating phenomena of the human mind. Our ability to enter this unique state of consciousness opens the door to countless possibilities for healing, and positive change. When we enter into the absorbed state of hypnosis, we can use our thoughts, talents and experiences in ways not usually available to us. We can develop the abilities that enable desired changes in our thoughts, feelings and behaviours to be possible.
What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, modern, and well-researched strategies such as brain based explanations, solution focused, NLP and CBT techniques to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. With Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we look at what the client wants to achieve (the solution) rather than at whatever prompted them to visit us (the problem).
Will I be looking at my past?
No, the approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. The client will be asked to consider their preferred future, for instance, what would be better if the problem had improved? What would have changed? This enables the client possible solutions to become more obvious and gives the client a goal to work towards.
Is it safe?
You can not be hypnotised to do things against your will. The hypnotherapist is merely a guide or facilitator. They cannot "make" you do anything against your will. This is a commonly held idea that has its source in stage shows and films that capitalize on the “power” of the hypnotist.
Can it help with my problem?
Hypnotherapy can be used to bring relief to existing conditions, change unwanted beliefs and behaviour, or enhance existing talents and potentials. The list of situations where it can aid the individual is endless and it is particularly effective for those who wish to gain greater control - or perhaps regain control - of some aspect of their life. It is a brief intervention therapy. The benefits are long lasting and often permanent. It is often successful when other, more conventional methods of treatment have failed. The British Medical Association approved hypnotherapy as a valid medical treatment in 1955
Misconceptions
There are many preconceived ideas around hypnotherapy.
“Hypnotherapy is mind control or magic.”
Clarification: Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic tool where you remain fully aware and in control. It simply uses relaxation and focus to help you access your subconscious mind and make positive changes.
“I might get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis.”
Clarification: It’s impossible to get “stuck” in hypnosis. Hypnosis is a natural, safe state of focused attention that you can emerge from at any time.
“I might reveal personal or private information during hypnosis.”
Clarification: During hypnotherapy, you remain fully in control of what you choose to share. Hypnosis does not compel you to disclose anything you don’t want to—it’s simply a relaxed state where you can focus more deeply on your goals.
“Hypnotherapy only works if you’re highly suggestible.”
Clarification: Most people can benefit from hypnotherapy, regardless of how “suggestible” they may feel. It’s a collaborative process designed to work with your individual comfort level.
“Hypnotherapy is only for quitting smoking or weight loss.”
Clarification: While it’s effective for those goals, hypnotherapy can also help with anxiety, confidence, stress management, phobias, and more.
“Hypnotherapy is just like stage hypnosis.”
Clarification: Unlike stage hypnosis, which is for entertainment, hypnotherapy is a structured, evidence-based approach that focuses on helping clients achieve their goals in a therapeutic setting.
“I’ll be unconscious or asleep during hypnosis.”
Clarification: Hypnosis is more like a deeply relaxed yet aware state. You’re conscious the entire time and can even talk during a hypnotherapy session if needed.
